Mt Dobson Ski Area

Built and run by the Foot family for the last 37 years, Dobson is a small commercial field in the Two Thumbs Range. The field offers cheap uncrowded snow, with perfect terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers. However if you are after steep lines you might find Dobson a little underwhelming.

Snow rating: ❆❆❆½

Being high on the Two Thumbs Range Dobson has reliable natural snow. Although the annual snowfall is not huge the snow is dry by New Zealand standards. Generally speaking Dobson does the best out of south easterly snow storms, but usually misses the brunt of systems from the west. Dobson does have grooming but not snowmaking, which they manage without.

TERRAIN RATING:❆❆

The terrain at Dobson is best described as intermediate, with the overall gradient of the field in two large bowls. Although not steep the terrain has it’s share of fun features to play around with including gullies, drops and wind lips. The terrain between the T-bar and chair is especially playful. If you are an intermediate or beginner skier you will be in heaven at Dobson as the slopes are uncrowded and wide.

Lifts rating:❆❆❆

For a small field Dobson is well equipped with lifts. It has a triple chair, T-bar and a long poma as well as a learners tow. The total vertical drop of the field 415 metres.

Backcountry Access:❆❆❆

Dobson’s location results in great backcountry access. The terrain outside the resort is well suited to ski touring. If you’re after gnarly lines, head out on the ridge from the summit, at the top of the T-bar. From here you can drop into the eastern side of the ridge which is full of excitement.

Accommodation:

There is no on mountain accommodation at Dobson. You can stay in Fairlie, which is closest and has by far New Zealand’s best pies, made at the Fairlie Bakehouse. Alternatively you can stay in Tekapo.

Road:❆❆❆❆

The Foots went all out on the access road, although gravel, it is wide and has a gentle gradient and is better than many commercial fields.

Bottom Line overall stoke rating:3

If you are a beginner, intermediate or just like keeping things mellow, Dobson is a  good choice, as it is far cheaper and less crowded than the resorts further south.
